Timing is one of the most important things to an athlete.
When I compete, I need to know when I have to be on the water and when my heat starts and ends. The same also applies when I'm working on strength and endurance. I would not be where I am, without working with the time.

It's hard to focus on one moment in time as my traser is with me all the time. They were one of my first sponsors, they believed in me since the beginning and made it happen for me to become a professional athlete and to compete on the PKRA world tour. I am now able to travel the world, live my sport and share my adventures and stories.

March, 2019 #trasertruestories by Manuela from Sal Cape Verde:

Sal in Cape Verde was the destination of my last trip. I have never been there before and did not know what to expect. I only knew from a teammate that there is a fantastic spot with a perfect wave. Just the conditions have to line up. The weather forecast looked very good for the whole month of February, and I could not wait to get there.

The island Sal is only 29.7 km long and 11.8 km wide, very dry and relatively flat. Sal’s capital, Espargos, can be found in the centre of the island, but the main resort area along the south of the island in Santa Maria. Here, you’ll see an endless expanse of golden beach which follows the coast all along the bay and around towards the western side of the island. The island got named Sal because of its two large salt ponds Pedra de Lume and Santa Maria.

I arrived with my boyfriend Victor Fernandez, who is a professional windsurfer, in the late evening at the international airport in Espargos, Sal. We got picked up by a friend of a friend who was renting his 4x4 pickup truck. I prefer to stay in an apartment, which is more comfortable allowing me to cook healthy food whenever I want to. It was so lovely to feel the warm sun the first morning in Sal, as the weather in Switzerland was just too cold the days before my trip. The forecast for Sal was very promising, and I could not wait to go to the beach after a good big breakfast.

The best spot where we wanted to ride was Ponta Preta, which was only 5 minutes from the place we were staying. The waves were beautiful, even if it was just a short first day for us because the same day we were also going to little Hookipa as well as Alibaba.
I can’t deny that I was getting a bit nervous. The waves, as well as the short break, were so powerful.  Even if you are an experienced kitesurfer or surfer, you had to be careful to stay safe. I have been kiteboarding since 2006, and the kite, got almost an extension of my arms, but riding waves is something new for me.

The day came where the waves got over head high, and I was in the middle of it. My heart rate was getting higher, and my adrenaline was rising. At this moment I knew there is no more going back,  or time to ask myself what could happen. It was my moment, and I was ready for this new experience. The feeling was incredible.  Lucky me I was able to ride many more amazing waves over the next few days. No matter what you are doing, it is essential to prepare well and give yourself the time until you feel ready to commit 100%. Everyone also experiences how bad it can turn out when the power of a wave is crashing on you. It happened to me as well, and I felt like the wave wanted to fall over my head, but luckily my kite was pulling me up and saving me from getting pushed down. However, I wanted to keep trying and follow my dreams.

My next trip will be to the magical island MAUI in Hawaii. I can not wait to tell you all about my new adventures.

Aloha
